Release date – 1st May 2015
I haven’t read the book yet although it waits on my bookshelf. Now I’m all fired up to tackle it ASAP. I’m almost afraid the trailer spoiled certain plot twists for me, but let’s hope it isn’t so. You probably already know about my relationship with Thomas Hardy and his novels, so I won’t repeat myself. I’ll certainly try to read the novel this movie adapted before the release date. Although going in blind has an appeal too. It would be embarrassing to bawl in the theatre though and Hardy does do a number on my emotions. The cast is amazing, so there’s no fear they won’t do a brilliant job and that means playing my heartstrings like pros.
The story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
