You may sigh and write this movie off as just another Disney production (and it certainly does everything in that vein from costumes to lavish scenes) but I hope the cast gets to show what they are made off and give us a fresh adaptation of an age-old story. While Cinderella was never my favourite fairy tale, my renewed interest in them has made me sit up and take notice. It doesn’t hurt that they cast Richard Madden, the doomed Robb Stark. Yes, the Red Wedding left scars… I just want to see him have a happy ending, you know? 😀
The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drizella. But when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet she is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. In an unexpected stroke of luck, she meets a dashing stranger in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul.
