I’m not much about celebrating this holiday because it has turned out to be horribly gift-centred and because I don’t have a partner to celebrate with, to be honest, so I generally let it pass by. The ads on all kinds of stuff – from perfumes, romance books, flowers, and chocolates – makes it impossible to miss. While it would be a good idea to take advantage of the bargains of the bookish kind, I’ve got enough unread books already.
Now than I think about it, perhaps enjoying a piece of my brother’s birthday gift – a couple of praline chocolates and eating a piece of chocolate cake (!) – can be understood as taking part of the holiday as well. 😀 It might be just a sharing of gifts among family, but this kind of love counts as well. Seriously though, how can anyone resist chocolate?
There are very different customs observed on this date around the world. For example, guys in Asia (S. Korea and Japan, for sure) are the ones who receive gifts of chocolate from the girls. One month later, 14th March, turns this around and the girls are the ones who receive gifts. I find this fascinating. (article on these two holidays)
Tumblr is a treasure trove of great images and quotes about the holiday and that is where I’ve got my pics for the post from. If nothing else, the holiday is good for spreading some love and calories around. 😀 Enjoy it to the best of your ability.
